In the realm of 3D design, shapes and forms are foundational elements that significantly influence the aesthetic and functional aspects of a project. The use of organic and geometric shapes in 3D design offers a diverse palette of options, each bringing unique characteristics and possibilities to the table.
Geometric Shapes and Forms
Geometric shapes are precise and regular, characterized by defined edges and predictable symmetry. The use of geometric shapes in 3D design is often associated with modernity, order, and clarity. In architecture, geometric forms are crucial. The symmetry and repetition of geometric forms can create visually appealing and structurally sound designs.
Hexagons
Geometric shapes like hexagons offer brands a more distinctive and ownable way to stand out at a show. These can be rigged LED arrays or floor mounted; both are shown in the photo above from
ICE 2024.
We believe that experiential design should include some bold and creative choices to stand out in a noisy, busy show. Harder, geometric shapes can work well for B2B brands who want to show confidence and technical superiority. They work best when they are repeated through a design to create consistency, as the triangular brand motif was in our
2024 design for Analog Devices.
Circles
Many brand experiences or exhibition booths need to face in two directions at once. High level box LED screens offer a tried and tested way of creating impact along two walkways, but we find that they lack the impact and interest that a circular design can generate. These designs are more symmetrical and confident than in organic flow shapes.
Evolve’s booth design for
Evolution at ICE
made the most of a corner position with high level, wrap around LED screens that saw content flowing around the booth. This created a dramatic, eye-catching presence for the brand that was impactful from several directions at once but provided a more modern and progressive brand image than a traditional, rectangular hanging banner would have achieved.
Our 3D experiential design studio uses a lot of spherical shapes. Nothing is more inviting and intriguing than a circular entrance way. The picture at the top of the page shows a portal entrance we designed and built for a
video game title launch at Gamescom. Stepping through a portal offers a moment of suspense and intrigue. A chance to surprise and delight customers with a VIP experience.
Organic Shapes and Forms
In contrast, organic shapes are irregular, fluid, and often asymmetrical, mimicking forms found in nature such as leaves, rocks, and animal bodies. Organic shapes bring a sense of naturalism, dynamism, and softness to 3D design. They are most useful in any context where a more natural or dynamic appearance is desired.
Booth shapes are increasingly moving away from rectangular layouts to softer, more organic shapes. Our 3D designers take inspiration from nature to create harmonious, inviting experiences that carry visitors through to the heart of your brand. Some of our most recent designs evoke the calm, undulating movement of water to capture the flow of visitors through the show. Softer spatial experiences are good for moving people through a booth in a clear journey.
Blending Organic and Geometric Forms
A contemporary trend in 3D design involves blending organic and geometric forms to create innovative and aesthetically pleasing compositions. This hybrid approach leverages the strengths of both shape types, resulting in designs that are structurally sound yet visually dynamic.
The integration of organic forms within geometric structures can lead to visually striking exhibition booths that stand out while maintaining structural integrity. Examples include buildings with wave-like facades or irregular shapes that break the monotony of traditional geometric architecture.
In conclusion, the use of organic and geometric shapes and forms in 3D design provides a rich toolkit for designers. By understanding and leveraging the unique characteristics of each, Evolve's designers can create works that are both functionally effective and visually compelling.
